Mashhad is Iran’s second most sacred city. The beautiful, large and growing Haram (temple complex) reminiscent of the martyrdom of the 818 AD Imam Reza, the eighth Imam of Shiite Islam, in the district and its main sight. The pain of Imam Reza’s death still feels well after a millennium, and each year more than 20 million pilgrims unite to fulfill their respects. Witnessing tears is an active experience even if you are not a Muslim yourself.
